No, you do not need a referral to see a psychologist, however if you decide to see your GP for a referral to a psychologist, you may be eligible to receive a Medicare rebate under the Better Access Initiative. This type of referral is called a Mental Health Care Plan.
The GP will conduct an assessment of your mental health and if they believe you are eligible to have a Mental Health Care Plan prepared, you will receive a Medicare rebate of $126.50 for each session, for up to ten sessions per calendar year. We have the facility to process your Medicare rebate.

Can I attend as private client?
Yes, you are welcome to attend as a private client. In this case, you may be eligible to receive a rebate from your private health fund, depending on the level of cover you hold. It is advisable to contact your fund and enquire about the rebate for clinical psychology.
Please note that you cannot claim a rebate from both Medicare and your private health insurance for one consultation. You will need to make a decision about which to use.
